[It's been a rough month. February. The stuff with the Black Order and the Constant and Fern and....whatever it is that lives in his head had made Varian deeply worried for his boyfriend. He's got his own...everything building up with Zodiac, too, but he can't talk about that. It doesn't matter anyway, what's going to happen to him is going to happen to him. He expects it'll be bad.
He can do nothing about that. but he can help Fern a little.
So on a day when he's not working for Zodiac and a day he knows Fern has a traffic guard shift, he gets home from school early to set up the apartment- he's been quietly crafting at night to get it ready- he hangs little paper hearts from the ceiling, and little fairy lights dotted around on various surfaces. He makes sure there's some coffee brewing ready for Fern's return home - nervously eyeing the parcel he's carefully wrapped and put on the kitchen table, waiting for his boyfriend to come home. ]
[Valentine's has been floating around in Fern's mind all day. It's a much-needed distraction what with everything that's been going on - just a nice, fluffy holiday that has nothing to do with dumb organizations or other universes or whatever.
He's eager to get home, having gotten a gift for Varian and anxious to give it to him. When he walks in the door though, oh wow, he is not expecting the apartment to be so decked out. He's in awe as he looks around, even noticing the smell of coffee wafting through the whole place, before focusing on his boyfriend.]
[He's going to go ahead and pull Varian into his arms to give him a kiss, because all of this is super romantic and he wants to enjoy the mood for a while.]
It's already the best Day of Hearts-slash-Valentine's Day ever.
[Varian lets out a soft, surprised squeak as he gets pulled into Fern's arms, but he's quickly eager to return that kiss, wrapping his arms around his boyfriend's shoulders. All the stress of the last few months melts away - everything just feels better when he's with Fern. He chuckles a little, pulling out of the kiss but definitely not moving his face far from Fern's. He flushes happily, nuzzling a little at his cheek. ]
Hah, already huh? And I haven't even given you your coffee or your present yet.
[He's pretty sure he'd be very happy without a gift of the coffee. The snuggling could be more than enough for the holiday (holidays) and he nuzzles Varian back.]
[Varian would be very happy to just stick with the snuggling, and a part of him wants to drag Fern to the couch and just spend the rest of the day kissing and snuggling. But he wants Fern to have the gift he's got for him- he's worked hard on it and it's important.
So he takes his boyfriend's hands and moves him to the kitchen table.]
Okay! Here you go, it's um- I've never given anyone a Day of Hearts-slash-Valentines gift before so I hope it's...uh. Okay.
[He's actually a little nervous about it. He slides the parcel over to Fern. Once he opens it, it's a glass jar with ich liebe dich written on a little card attached to it. The jar is full of little scrolls. Varian flushes, taking a deep breath.]
I um, so this jar is full of these little scrolls- 365 of them, actually. One for every day of the year. Each one has something really special about you written on it. So-so every morning you can open one and have a reminder of what an amazing person you are.
[Because Fern might have even worse self-worth issues than he does himself. He wants to help with that, a lot. ]
[Fern opens the gift and his jaw drops. He needs the explanation from Varian to understand it, but when he does he's totally floored.]
This - this is -
[This isn't something he's ever, ever gotten. It's the reassurance of his identity from someone he cares deeply about. Even though the notes are probably full of reminders he doesn't believe (especially not after the reinforcement from the Black Order that he's just grass) it's still touching that Varian went to all this effort for him.
Before he realizes it he's starting to tear up. He might not be able to drink the coffee, but he can still cry. He sniffles.]
[Varian had been pretty nervous about the gift, truth be told. Things had been rough for both of them recently and he wasn't sure if it would be a welcomed gift or not. He's VERY glad to see that it's been received, even if the tears are a bit of a worry.]
Yeah? You-you really like it? Those are happy tears, right? I- I don't think "making your date cry on the romance holiday" is something people would aspire to, otherwise.
[That just makes him blush even harder. Geez, for someone who never really celebrated the Day of Hearts and never celebrated Valentine's before, Varian's doing a great job with both.]
I know, I know. [He obviously doesn't believe that, but Varian does, which makes this extra important.]
Um, my gift isn't nearly as good as this. Just so you're warned.
[He's definitely gone ALL out on it. His only real example to follow was Rapunzel and Eugene before this, so he knows only to be extra.]
I'm sure it'll be perfect, Fern. It- I mean, it's from you and it's the first gift I've ever had for this holiday. I can't see it being anything but perfect. Unless it's like... a dead fish. It's not a dead fish, right?
[He has to snort at that, scooting over to the fridge and opening it.]
It's the opposite of a dead fish, dude.
[He's going to dig around in the crisper, having to remove the food they've got in there to pull out a hidden tupperware container that's got a bow tied around it. In side are a dozen heart-shapedOreos chocolate sandwich cookies, decorated with red, pink and white sprinkles around the edges.]
[The key to Varian's heart may be science, but the hidden secret doorway there is definitely baked goods. His eyes widen as Fenr pulls out the hidden tupperware. He peers at the delicious cookies, reaching in to pick one up carefully.]
Fern, these look amazing! [He holds it like a precious thing, almost like it would be a shame to eat it and destroy it. But his sweet tooth gets the better of him and he scarfs one down. With a full mouth-] Amd tey delishus!!!
[They don't feel like enough, not after Varian's gift, but Fern is at least glad that he likes the cookies. He even laughs a little when Varian immediately shoves one into his mouth.]
O - oh, cool! They're chocolate, and they're hearts 'cause - well. You know.
[The lack of homesickness has been on Varian's mind for a while- that added with the fact he's found he can only go so far away from the town and what he's learning in Zodiac...well. It's painted a worrying picture. He's been too busy with Zodiac to properly look at it- for now, he'll work on the assumption they'll be here next year and the rest...well. He'll get to the rest later.
He smiles, picking one of Fern's (nontoxic) flowers to put behind his own ear.]

You're awesome. The best. There's no one here better than you. I'm gonna do my best to read one every single day.

Oh, I don't know. I think I have a pretty sizeable list there showing how much I think you're the best. And you'd better! It's important!
[It's important Fern knows JUST HOW MUCH Varian thinks of him.]

Next year? [That's so far away, and that raises the question of whether both of them will even be here in one year....
But thanks to the whole peach thing, he doesn't feel that homesick. In fact, it sounds kind of nice, already planning for next year's holiday(s).]
That... that'd be cool. Doing even more for both days next year.
