[ There's a large image attachment: a detailed topographic map of Trench overlaid with the measurements of relevant elements K scanned for, noted by percentage. For Fern's convenience, K has also gone over the map and marked any of the most promising areas by hand. Unfortunately, as expected, those aren't exactly plentiful. It's a very good thing others have been able to help with the plant-food problem. ]
My scanners also detected something... interesting? In the soil. I'm compiling that data now. Maybe you can help make more sense of it.
[Readouts? Fern has no idea what K is talking about. He opens the attachment, and ohhh boy, this is way more than Fern can understand. He's going to have to show this to Varian, he can't make heads or tails of it.]
i uh wow i can try no guarantees though, this looks like science junk if i can't help Varian might be able to
Oh, sorry. I tried to make the map easy to understand but I've never done this before. I can get close up images of all the locations I marked if that'll help you find them? I bet Varian might be able to help too.
[ It'll be another few moments before K sends a second topographic map of Trench, this one far more simplified than the last. It's monochromatic, with the key feature being represented by black to stand out: the substance completely dominates the map. Whatever it is, it's present virtually everywhere in Trench. ]
Deep in the ground there's a massive organic substance. It's everywhere here. Based on the readouts, I'd peg it as a type of fungi. There's even traces of it in the surface soil of some areas. Have you ever seen anything like this before? Maybe in Deerington?
It seems highly unusual, but might just be normal for this place. I'm going to continue looking through the data I collected.
that's ok dude i'm just not that smart close ups would help, i bet!
[Ooh, this map really looks sketchy. He really isn't good with maps, but even he can see there's something ominous going on with this one.]
wow what the heck what the flippin HECK like some kind of mega mush? um, i've never seen anything like that in Deerington, no it kind of reminds me of something that happened in Ooo but PB isn't here so it can't be because of her
ok man want me to do anything? should i ask around about suspicious mushrooms?
[ And K will get to work annotating the soil map with those close-ups. ]
That's a good idea. The more we can find out about it, the better, I'd say. Especially if you're going to be using the soil here.
The sheer mass of it is slightly concerning if only because none of the locals seem aware of it that I've noticed. Or at least none have mentioned it. Then again, what are the odds it might just be another kind of Pthumerian? I don't know enough about them.
they don't know?? oh geez, that can't be good maybe it's just so normal they don't care about it? or maybe you're right, maybe it's just a Pthumerian so there's no reason for them to think it's special
oh um PB has some elemental powers and they went kind of bonkers and she turned the whole island into candy
[ As if he could ever forget about the sheer strangeness of Ooo, this just paints an even more vivid picture of the place. Also, everything being turned into candy? Sounds horrifying. ]
So normal they don't care about it may be it. It's hard to imagine they're completely oblivious to it. Being in Deerington for so long has made me maybe overly paranoid about these things, I think. Or just paranoid enough...
I remember something about there being sentient candy people in Ooo? But that sounds like it was bad, changing everything like that. Worse than bad, if people also got changed against their will. What happened after that? Was she able to reverse it?

i feel paranoid about this too
um yup, PB's subjects
[It really wasn't a good time, and it's something Fern has told essentially no one because of how nightmarish it was being candy.]
