Maybe not the parts the fae are occupying, though. They're really touchy about people being on what they've decided is their turf. But otherwise, sure! Sounds nice.

And the weather is definitely nice enough for it. It's a far cry from the winter weather, which Fern is endlessly grateful for. He and Varian head out to the park, pointedly avoiding the more dangerous areas. It's nice, almost enough to forget there are any potentially ominous situations looming over them.

Fern is very happy. This is a lot more chill than his last birthday, but it's a nice kind of chill. He's holding Varian's hand as they wander down one of the paths, grinning away, flowers blooming in his hair.]

Didn't think I'd be celebrating my eighteenth birthday here, but that's pretty cool.

[Varian gives Fern's hand a little squeeze, happy to be out here with his boyfriend. Sure, things are horrible and he knows they're about to get so much worse- and a part of him is really worried about much his loved ones will hate him once they find out how much he's lied to them for the past few months.

For now, though, he's trying to push that all out of his mind so he can focus on this good time with his boyfriend. He WANTS Fern to have a nice day here. He also might have a suspiciously sword-shaped gift jutting out of his backpack. ]

Yeah? Well, I think there's definitely worse places to spend a birthday. [He knows that as a FACT.] But...yeah, this is nice. I'm happy I got to spend it with you.

[Yeah that gift did not escape Fern's notice, and it's lowkey making him even more excited than normal. If it's shaped like a sword it's probably a sword, and he can always use more swords for his sword wall (and for wielding, obviously)!!]

I am, too. Finn's birthday was always a big deal, and this is the first time it's felt like that for me.

[Even though there's no giant party with decorations and games and a huge cake. He doesn't feel like he needs any of that stuff right now.]

[Unless, of course, it's a pile of books cleverly disguised as a sword. But Varian wouldn't do that to him, right?

...Right?]

Well, this time can be ALL for you. On account that you're the only one here and you're definitely the only one who matters to me between the both of you, so-

[He hands the gift over to Fern.]

Happy birthday, congrats on reaching adulthood!

[ARE they cleverly stacked books? No, it really is a sword. It's a little roughshod- made of wood and metal, but even it's it's rough around the edges, it's clear a lot of time and love went into it. He rubs the back of his head.]

I uh...know it's not the prettiest thing in the world. I've never actually made a sword before and this time doesn't have any blacksmithy so I kinda had to work at it with my own powers when you weren't home.

[Fern snorts and takes the gift. Yeah, if Finn ever showed up here there would be problems, but he's pretty sure Varian would stick by him.

(And he promptly shoves those thoughts out of his head before he can start doubting them. This is a nice day and he doesn't want to ruin it.)

He'll focus on unwrapping the present, his eyes widening as he reveals the sword. It's definitely rustic, but that only makes it better in Fern's eyes. After all, his first real sword back when he was Finn had been a chipped mess. This one reminds him a little of that, of Scarlet.]

Oh my Glob, V. This is amazing!

[He quickly steps away so that he can give the sword a few test swings.]

I love it!!

[Varian would absolutely drop-kick Finn into the Spirit Realm and pretend he knew nothing about it. In a heartbeat.

He brightens considerably when Fern receives the gift well. He knows he hasn't been able to work on it as well as he'd like. It's not perfect and that rankles him a little- but things have been what they have, and this is as good as it's got.]

You really do?

Sure! It's a great sword! It reminds me of one of my first swords I had back home.

[He'll even do a little spin with it in his hand, before lowering it so he can step over to Varian and scoop him up into a hug. He's spinning him, too. As he does, yarrow and nightshade and anemone are sprouting in his hair.]

It does? Really?

[That's pleasing, that he's been able to give Fern something of a nice reminder of home- he doubts there's many of those for the other boy. The sudden scoop surprises him, and he lets out a soft squeak, which quickly dissolves into laughter as he's spun around. ]

You're welcome. Happy birthday, Bärchen.

[The nickname makes him blush deeply and after another moment he sets Varian down, but it's so he can pull him into a deep kiss. Yep, excellent birthday, a sword and his boyfriend, what more could anyone ask for?

When he pulls back he's looking just so, so happy.]

This is the best birthday ever, V. Seriously. I wouldn't want to have it any other way.

[Oh, wow, he sure does return that kiss, and when Fern pulls back, he looks a little dazed. After a few moments of owlish blinking, a doofy, lopsided smile crosses his face. He's definitely blushing up a storm. ]

I'm really glad to hear that. [His hands shift up to play with Fern's hair, you know, while he's so close and all.] I really wanted you to have a good birthday.

[Fern can't help but blush at Varian's reaction when he pulls back. The lopsided smile of his is so endearing.]

To be honest, I never expected to have another good one. [The last one had only been good in a terrible kind of way. It hadn't been the genuine, sincere kind of good that came with all of Finn's birthdays. As Fern he didn't have those friends and family anymore - so as far as he was concerned, no one was going to get him gifts. No one was going to bake him a cake. No one was going to care.]

So just having one that doesn't suck is really, really great.

[He's very enamoured right now, the smile is definitely sticking around for a little bit.]

Well, I'm just gonna have to make sure that every one is going to be great now. I might not be able to outdo myself every year, but boy, will I do everything I can to make sure they don't suck.

[Oh wow. Outdo himself? That's a lot.]

You don't gotta do something big every year. As long as I can spend it with you I'll be happy.

Oh...well, that's good. [He's way too much of an overachiever to NOT try and outdo himself but still-] I mean, I'm really happy spending time with you, too. I just think you deserve to have something really special.

Geez.... [He opens his mouth to argue that no, he really doesn't, but he knows Varian won't put up with that. So he just blushes and reaches up to scratch a hand through his hair.]

Can we settle for something not terrible? It's not like there's a high bar to clear there.

[Fern is very correct, Varain would not put up with that. Still, this seems a fair compromise so he nods.]

Okay, not terrible sounds like a reasonable goal.

Okay cool. [It's a start, and who knows, maybe this time next year he'll want to bump it up from 'not terrible' to 'good.']
